Question:
Introduction: What is God like?
Answer:
David the prophet said, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard." (Psalm 19:1-3) The creation certainly proclaims God's glory. When we look up at the stars and this vast universe it is clear that God is wise and powerful. Everywhere in the world people should be able to see that there is a God who made the heavens. But what else can we know about God?
The fact is that we could know nothing about God unless he revealed himself to us. Let me give you a human example. When we see a person on the street we can see certain things about him. But we don't know if he is good or bad. We don't know if he can draw beautiful pictures or write wonderful books. We don't even know for sure what he is thinking. Even with our friends and family we sometimes have to ask them what they think or feel. When a person tells us what they are thinking or feeling they are revealing knowledge to us.
God of course is beyond us. When we say God is great we are making an understatement. What does God think or feel? What is God like? Since we cannot even see God, we could only guess. But God in his mercy wants us to know him and so he has revealed himself to us. He has revealed himself to us in his word through the prophets. That is where God speaks to us. God tells us that he is:
- Holy
- Just
- Merciful/forgiving
- All knowing
- Almighty or All Powerful
- Eternal
- Good
- Faithful
- Love
