Question:
Do Christians worship three Gods? (Part II)
Answer:
In talking about idolatry we mentioned Jesus words when he was asked which commandment of God was the greatest. He said, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." (Mark 12:29-30)
Jesus of course was teaching that there was only one true God who is worthy of all praise and worship. But who is that God? If all we had was the universe and our five senses we could only guess. Some might think God is this and others that. But God hasn’t left us in the dark as to his identity. He has revealed himself to us through the prophets.
For this reason we know that the gods of the nations are really not gods. The thousands of "gods" of the Hindus are but the imaginations of men and are instead demons. Idolatry is as we said before, worshipping anyone or anything other than the one true God who is over all. That means while the prayers of the Buddhist may be sincere, nevertheless since they are directed not to the one true God they are worthless.
Now to the question on your heart and mind. Are Christians like Hindus and Buddhists? Do they worship many gods? Do they worship three gods?
My dear Muslim friend I am here to tell you that the Word of God commands us to worship none other than the one true God of Heaven who created all that is. All Christians who follow the Bible will unanimously say that we worship only one God who is above all, forever praised amen! In fact the New Testament (Injil) says that there is "one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." (Ephesians 4:6) This one God, the God of Abraham (Ibrahim) who created heaven and earth, the sea and the land and all that is in them, he is the one we worship, praise and love.
Some have said that Christians worship God, Jesus and Mary (Maryam). I can see why some have said that. In the past there were people who claimed to be Christian who said that God, Jesus and Mary were to be worshipped. The Christians condemned this teaching as contrary to all that God has said through the prophets. Even today there are many who call themselves Christian who pray to the Virgin Mary. This however is forbidden by God and it is terrible idolatry. You find some "Muslims" who pray to saints or seek their help. Muslims rightly condemn this practice since it too is idolatry. We should pray only to God.
Mary was a special woman who was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus. She was a virgin and had never had sex with a man and yet by God's great power she had a child. However Mary is great not because she was better than other women. She was great because of God's great mercy to her and what he did in her life. It was a blessing from God that she should be the mother of the Messiah Jesus. So while many Christians throughout the world respect Mary as do Muslims, we do not worship her. She was created by God, only a servant of the Most High.
Mary herself says the same as she praises God. Mary said, "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name." (Luke 1:46-49)
Take a moment to think about her words. What can you praise God for today? What great things has he done for you?
