Jesus Invites Levi to Follow Him
The Holy Injil—Luke 5:27-32
After that, Jesus left. He saw a tax collector named Levi sitting in a tax office. Jesus said to him, "Follow me!" So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.
Levi held a large reception at his home for Jesus. A huge crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.
The Pharisees and their scribes complained to Jesus' disciples. They asked, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"
Jesus answered them, "Healthy people don’t need a doctor; those who are sick do. I've come to call sinners to repent, not to call people who think they don't have any flaws."
1. Do you understand who these tax collectors were?
2. How did Levi respond when Jesus said, "Follow me"?
3. What does it mean that Jesus accepted Levi's invitation? What would it mean in your culture to accept an invitation to go and eat at someone's house?
4. Why were the Pharisees mad at Jesus? Were they right to object or not?
5. Is acceptance with God possible for someone who has not done a lot of good things to earn it?
6. What did Jesus mean by saying that a doctor helps only the sick? What kind of people receive Jesus' forgiveness? What kind of people do not?
